VERONICA MARS AND KICKSTARTER AND OUR BRAVE NEW WORLD
SO. As most of you probably already know, the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter met its minimum goal of $2 million dollars in less than twelve hours.
This is, from my perspective and the perspective of many fans, a demonstration of exactly how powerful and awesome the collective fans of this show are. Warner Brothers as a studio didn’t want to take on the risk of allowing the original creator, Rob Thomas, and the main star, Kristen Bell, to make a movie that might not recoup its financial investment, given its small audience while the television show was on air. The WB essentially allowed Rob and Kristen to ask the fans to put our money where our mouths are, and we did just that.
However. There has also been a backlash from various corners of the internet, with a number of great rebuttals already out there. Some of the arguments that people are making include that this is allowing the studios to have their cake and eat it too, or that we’re depriving other worthy artists who lack a studio connection of needed support, or that we should be donating to charity instead (since of course for all of us, the cash we had was either going to the VMars movie OR Planned Parenthood, rather than to the VMars movie or any other discretionary spending purchase of our choice).
Honestly, I have no patience for any of these arguments.
